Wet Carpet and Storm Damage
After all this rain we have had recently it was inevitable we would get some phone calls regarding wet carpet. Two of the wet carpet jobs we attended to were both carpet tiles laid on a concrete floor. There was minimal water ingress. Prompt attention will result in a good outcome with both carpets dry in under 24 hours.
Firstly these carpet tiles were extracted using our truck-mounted machine. This removes the excess water allowing the carpet tiles to dry much quicker. Keeping the furniture away from the affected area also improves the drying time. Following the extraction with the installation of a carpet drier really aids in getting these carpet tiles dry as quickly as possible. Both places being commercial premises, they will be up and running before they re-open on Monday.
Wet Carpet and Staining
Older carpet often suffered from water staining after being over wet, not just from flood but also if a poor carpet cleaning job was performed. Wetting the Jute backing and releasing the sugars caused brown stains to appear as the carpet dried similar to an apple browning when left. Many new carpets have done away with Jute as a backing. These new carpets are self-backed, having no secondary backing or polypropylene secondary backed.
The carpet above had some small bookcases sitting on top of the affected area. This meant the carpet problems were not noticed immediately. In fact this damage was not noticed for at least a week. However with assisted drying and a good clean the carpet was repaired to the customers satisfaction. Being a nylon fiber helped here. Nylon is not susceptible to much mould growth at all. Cleaning is able to remove this reasonably easily from Nylon. Wool fibers, being natural can be effected quite badly from mould. Prompt attention is a must.
Wet Carpet is fixable
Yes, water damaged carpet is fixable. There are 4 basic properties that make a carpet easy or difficult to repair once wet. How old the carpet is, the condition of the carpet, how wet it is and how quickly the carpet can be dried all need to be taken into account. Older carpet that is very wet can be difficult to repair. And if a carpet takes a long time to dry this can result in problems as well. Some staining will be unable to be removed such as wood furniture stains. Rust stains can often be removed easily.
