Common Carpet Problems
Over the years we have seen many common carpet problems. Staining of carpet is normally the most prevalent issue that consumers will deal with. However there are also many other issues that can be solved with the right approach, some time and a little common sense.
Stain Removal
Probably the number one issue that arises with carpet is spots and stains. The correct approach will make a big difference. Prompt attention always helps. The correct remedy is also very important. Firstly, our Stain Removal page should be the first place to look. Also, have a look around our site. There are many different solutions to different spots and stains spread around on different pages.
Carpet Stretching
Often carpet will stretch over time causing unsightly ripples. The original tightness of the carpet, humidity and wear and tear all contribute to stretching. Heavy furniture could also contribute to carpet stretching in certain areas. For the most part this problem is fixable. If the stretching is very noticeable I suggest employing a carpet layer for a better job. The age of the carpet will have an impact on the result. Older carpet drys out and is difficult to stretch.
Fading, Dye Loss and Ultra-Violet Damage
Dye loss and Ultra-Violet damage are also some of the more common carpet problems. Whether from Ultra-Violet light or cleaning chemicals, Dye loss is permanent. Darker carpet colours will lose more colour and the dye loss will be more noticeable. Spot-dying may be available for some carpet.
Ultra-Violet light damage can also be a big problem. UV degradation breaks down the carpet causing holes to appear. This problem normally occurs near windows exposed to high amounts of light. Window tinting can help.
Pile Crush, Dents and Pressure Banding
Pile crush, shading and pile reversal occur on many carpets. Normally the carpet would need to be a plush pile carpet. The Carpet Institute of Australia has a good explanation of this. Permanent Pile Reversal Shading. Pressure Banding of carpet occurs due to the wight of the carpet ‘crushing’ the fiber when in a roll. Normally this will fix itself over a short period of time. However the crush may need a light clean to remove it.
Different carpet fibers react different to installed furniture. Wool fibers are more naturally resilient. Dents in Polypropylene can often take a long to disappear. Finally, the quality of the underlay will have an impact on resilience.
Common Carpet Problems, Carpet Beetle
Common carpet problems in wool carpet have to include the Australian Carpet Beetle. This beetle has effected many Australian wool carpets. Man-made fibers such as Nylon are not effected. Finding a large piece of carpet damaged can be very disheartening.
A carpet beetle and moth treatment is applied to wool carpet. This is a deterrent. It does not kill them. Also there is some evidence that the insects are becoming immune to this. For this reason regular vacuuming and cleaning is important. Because the insects like to get under furniture, moving furniture for vacuuming is necessary as well. Soil Filtration Lines
Soil filtration lines are the black marks on carpet around walls, doorways (especially cupboards) and under curtains. The can be quite difficult to remove. The type of carpet and length of time the lines have been there have an impact. Soil Filtration lines are caused by air passing over carpet and dropping oily dirt onto the carpet.
Regular vacuuming and professional carpet cleaning alleviates this issue. This could be part of a regular maintenance schedule.
