Cleaning Nylon Carpet
Nylon Carpet is an easy to maintain, durable, resilient carpet fibre used in many different applications. It is a very popular choice today due to several factors. And for the most part, cleaning of Nylon Carpet is a breeze.
- Resilience, it ‘bounces back’ reasonably well compared to other fibres
- Durability, the carpet will last many years with regular maintenance
- Stain resistant properties make it easier than some other fibres for removing stains
- New ‘Solution Dyed’ Nylon carpets are great for cleaning and maintenance
- Quick Drying after the cleaning of Nylon carpet
History
Nylon has been used in carpet fibres in Australia since the early 1950’s. Nylon was the first truly synthetic fibre to be used in the carpeting industry. Over the years it has become a good choice providing a range of styles and colours with ease of maintenance. The latest ‘solution’ dyed nylon carpets ensure the fibre is all dye (dyed as a liquid) making it much easier for the removal of stains.
Cleaning Nylon Carpet and Spot Removal
Regular cleaning is important for all carpet fibres. We use and recommend the Hot water Extraction method for the cleaning of Nylon carpet. Nylon carpet responds well to this form of carpet cleaning. Drying times are good as the Nylon fibre has low absorbency rates compared to other fibres. Vacuuming regularly minimises the possibility of soils that could damage the nylon fibre. This is especially important as soils could distort the fibre and cause some colour variation.
For general spot and stain removal of Nylon carpet our stain chart will help. Prompt attention to stains is important. Especially for food or drink stains on soft furnishings. Leaving stains for too long may well make it very difficult to remove. However saying that, Nylon is quite a good fibre for the removal of stains if attended to early.
Issues with cleaning Nylon carpet
There aren’t too many issues associated with Nylon carpet at all. Early Nylon carpet was susceptible to dye stains. Not all the dye sites were taken up with dye. This resulted in Nylon carpet re-dying if dye stains occurred. The new Solution Dyed Nylons have eliminated this for the most part. Some slight colour change could still occur. Nylon carpet is quite good as far as resilience goes.
Furniture ‘dents’ still occur. Of course the underlay contributes to this as well. However I find Polypropylene carpets much worse for this.
Sometimes after cleaning the Nylon fibre will stick together a little. A (very) quick vacuum after drying will fix this, opening up the fibre.
The fibre does suffer some distortion over time especially if not vacuumed or cleaned regularly. Regular vacuuming is important. Regular cleaning is important. Weekly vacuuming of high traffic areas and yearly professional cleaning.
