Carpet Tips and Tricks (Part 1)
Spot removal, vacuuming, dents in carpet, what sort of fiber should I get? These are some of the questions that these pages on carpet tips and tricks will look into. Keeping your home looking great with good maintenance regimes is important. We aim to help.
Cleaning Plastic Capping
Keeping your plastic edge capping clean is easy. Often over-looked when everything else around it is being cleaned or vacuumed, there is a simple cleaning method right in your house. All that is needed is a little methylated spirits or mineral turps on a cloth and wipe over. You will only need a small amount, around half a cap poured onto a cloth (not onto the capping) and a wipe over. Cooking grease and soil are the main culprit here. Just a simple wipe over makes the capping look great!!
Carpet UV Damage
The break down of carpet fiber and backing caused by ultraviolet light can cause serious problems. This damage tends to be unseen until the carpet fiber starts to break down completely. Unable to be repaired without patching, it’s therefore a good idea to ensure there is minimal direct sunlight on your carpet and to have some form of window tinting and or shading if this is unavoidable. This form of damage can take a few years to occur. It is much better to start out minimising the possible damage. Man-made fibers are more susceptible to this form of damage.
Make-up removal
One of the most common types of spots on carpet is make-up. From Eyeliner to Lipstick, these stains are normally reasonably easy to remove.
Firstly, a more in depth look at Make-up removal is on this page, Removing Makeup from Carpet. However for smaller make-up stains such as the one above, a simple wipe over with a cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit or mineral turps will suffice. Always put the cleaner on the cloth instead of pouring on the carpet. You will achieve a better result and not leave as much residue in the carpet.
Carpet tips on Vacuuming
For general maintenance, weekly vacuuming is recommended, more often in high traffic areas as need. Vacuuming against the pile is best, lifting the pile and removing the soil at the same time. For your large furniture items such as beds, I normally suggest moving away form the wall and vacuuming every 3 to 6 months depending on the amount of dust and soiling present. Remember, regular vacuuming to remove soiling will prolong the life of your furnishings.
Carpet Tips on Dents
Your carpet dents and resilience are based on a few factors. The type of carpet fiber, the type of underlay, the weight of the furniture and the length of time the furniture has been sitting there.
Wool carpet is the most resilient. Polypropylene carpet tends to dent much more and also takes longer to bounce back. The carpet above is polypropylene. Dents in carpet are not just the fiber compacting but there will also be a crease in the back of the carpet and the underlay may be compacted also. This is why it can take some considerable time for dents to disappear. Moving furniture around regularly will help. Though if the furniture is heavy there will always be some dents occurring.
